Educ: Kaiser Wilhelm's Univ. of Strassburg; Royal Acad, of Music, Munich. To U.S. 1893 as accompanist for Metropolitan Opera Company. Teacher of piano, theory, composition at National Cons, of Music, N.Y., 1898-1906. Coll. of Music and Inst, of Musical Art; then to Coll. of Music, Cincinnati, as prin­cipal of Theory Dcpt. and director of College Chorus. To Chicago 1917-25 as head of Theory Dept., Chicago Musical Coll.; Dean of faculty of Chicago Coll. of Music 1925-34. Composer of orchestra and chamber music, choral and piano music, songs, violin music. Awards include the Mendelssohn Stipendium, Berlin, 1891; Tonkuenstler prize, Vienna, 1892; Kaiser prize, Baltimore, 1903; also prizes in key cities of U.S. Or­chestral works. From the Mountain Kingdom of the Great Northwest; Old German Masters Suite, for string or­chestra. Choral with violin obbligato: "Agnus Dei" (Bizet), "Ave Maria" (Schubert). Service for two years writing music for GI shows, Italy. Played violin and guitar in popular orchestras; also vocalist for popular orchestras. Songs. First musi­cal instruction from Signor Della-bovi; piano scholarship at David Mannes Music School, athletic scholarship Columbia Univ. Membei of track team and college band. Columbia Univ., Bachelor of Arts 1931. Professional arranger, pianist various bands 1928. Wrote songs foi Columbia Varsity shows. As undci-graduate worked with Protessoi Douglas Moore and Professor Seth Bingham. Post-Grad year, Columbia Teachers Coll., studied pedagogy and advanced harmony and composition with Dr. Murphy; later orchestral composition with Professor Deszo D'Antalffy. Followed ten years activ­ity as conductor, composer, teacher and arranger. World War II, Captain, Special Services Army Air Corp, 1942-46. Wrote musical score for all-soldier show, High Flight. On dis­charge became associate conductor St. Louis Municipal Opera Company.
